Sealcoating, Marlton, NJ

Sealcoating, Marlton, NJ, asphalt sealcoating Boasting its own natural beauty, this area in the southwestern section of the county consists of large rural sections that are both fertile and partially wooded. While springs and autumns are surprisingly brief, winters are long, with successive storms that ensure there is usually a cover of snow on the ground. However, winter temperatures frequently climb above freezing, allowing snow and ice to melt. Any water trapped beneath the asphalt surface can then refreeze and cause additional damage. Sealcoating, Marlton, NJ, should be considered.

5 Quick Tips on Maintaining your Driveway in the Winter

5 Quick Tips on Maintaining your Driveway in the WinterMore than one homeowner has seen a driveway that appeared perfectly fine disappear under a blanket of ice and snow, emerging in the spring as a dull, cracked, shadow of its former self. Ideally, asphalt maintenance should be performed year-round, but there are certain steps that can be taken in winter to help prevent damage.

5 Quick Tips on Maintaining your Driveway in the Winter

• Avoid chemical deicing agents as well products containing rock salt. They may melt through the ice quickly, but their corrosive effects can damage asphalt. Opt for sand or kitty litter instead to improve traction and help expedite melting.
• Use a rubber-bladed snow shovel rather than a metal variety. Especially avoid metal shovels that have a pointed tip as they can damage your pavement.
• Whether you hire someone to plow your drive or do it yourself, make sure that the blade is set to the correct height. If it is too low, it can scrape the asphalt.
• Ensure that your driveway has proper drainage. It is often helpful to remove a two-inch strip of grass along the driveway’s perimeter to facilitate runoff.
• Keep gutter spouts pointed away from your driveway. If rain or melting snow is allowed to flow freely onto your driveway, it can freeze. This can pose a safety hazard, but it can also endanger your asphalt.

Maintaining your driveway throughout the year can help prevent damages caused by winter weather. Having crack repair as soon as you notice them, and at minimum, have any cracks professionally filled before winter arrives. Cracks allow water to pool beneath the pavement, and then when the water freezes, it can expand and cause additional cracking. Having your driveway sealed in the autumn is another way to protect your asphalt against winter weather.

Why Safety Is Important When Hiring An Asphalt Contractor

Why Safety Is Important When Hiring An Asphalt ContractorAlthough most people understand how important a safe environment is to employees, many do not understand how it benefits customers. However, when you examine the following facts, the explanation becomes much clearer.

Why Safety Is Important When Hiring An Asphalt Contractor – Examples

Safety Records can Affect Pricing

Asphalt contractors with good safety records can typically charge lower rates for the same services and product quality. Workplace accidents cost companies in various ways, including the cost of their insurance premiums. Liability and workers’ comp insurance underwriters base rates primarily on a company’s history of injuries suffered by employees, and when rates go up, the company must adjust pricing accordingly. A less obvious cost is incurred when an accident occurs. Work will often be delayed while the incident is investigated, and to make up for lost time, the company may be forced to pay overtime.

Productivity Tends to Increase

Employees who feel that a company is looking out for the safety of its workers tend to be happier with their jobs. They go the “extra step” for customers to ensure that the job is done correctly and finished on time. They take pride in the quality of their work.

Safety Awareness Transfers to Customers

Safety-conscious employees are far more likely to look out for a customer’s visitors or employees. An awareness of the hazards that are present on a worksite tends to instill a protective attitude that encompasses everyone who enters or attempts to enter the site.

Employee Retention Rates Improve

Employees are not as likely to leave an employer who cares about safety. This means that such companies tend to have workers who have more experience, which helps ensure that a quality job will result.

Asphalt Pavement Solutions, an asphalt company serving the Philadelphia and Camden areas, communicates the importance of following safety procedures to their employees.  APS also takes the time to educate employees about the chemicals they use and complies with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Additionally, managers listen to employees, so everyone can work together to reduce hazards.

Does Crack-filling Really Work

Does Crack-filling Really WorkFilling cracks in asphalt pavement is a long-established — and highly effective — part of maintaining a surface and extending its life. It is also essential if the property owner wants to avoid more costly repairs in the future or replace the surface long before it should have been necessary.

Does Crack-filling Really Work – How?

Asphalt pavement requires a solid foundation on which to rest. Cracks let water penetrate to the foundation, causing erosion. The freeze/thaw cycle does even more damage. Before long, the pavement can become riddled with potholes or multiple cracks, which leads to further erosion of the foundation’s integrity. Once the foundation becomes sufficiently degraded, it can no longer support the weight of the pavement and the traffic.

Crack filling keeps the water where it belongs — on top of the pavement, not beneath it. Filling should be part of every property owner’s asphalt maintenance plan, and all cracks need to be filled and stabilized prior to having sealant applied.

However, it is important to note what crack filling is not. It is not a method of fixing deep, gaping holes in the pavement. It is not considered an invisible repair in all cases; small cracks may not stand out after sealant is applied, but larger cracks may remain visible. It is not a “miracle cure” for a surface that has been improperly installed or neglected for decades.

It is also not a job for amateurs. Different materials and filling methods can be used, depending on the specific nature of the crack. Asphalt Pavement Solutions has more than 30 years of experience with maintaining and repairing asphalt surfaces. We provide services to clients throughout the states of New Jersey, Delaware and Philadelphia. How Many Coats Are Necessary When Sealcoating

In some cases, a residential driveway will only need one coat of sealant. However, if the asphalt sealcoating has never been sealed before, it may take a second coat to give it the rich, deep finish that most homeowners prefer. A second coat may also be indicated if there is some “unraveling” of the asphalt.

Commercial properties, such as apartment complexes or shopping malls, usually need two coats of sealant to protect the surface. In addition, a third “spot” coat may be needed for areas that see the most wear, such as around mailboxes or at entrance drives.

Whether a job requires one coat or two, there are three facts about asphalt sealers that need to be kept in mind. The first is that sealants are water-based, which means that they dry from the evaporation of the moisture contained in the sealer. Anything that prevents the water from evaporating can have a detrimental effect on the quality of the finished product. That is why the sealant must be completely dry before a second coat is applied or before striping can begin. Vehicles need to be kept away from the area until the sealant has dried thoroughly.

The second fact about sealers is that, while they can greatly enhance the appearance of an asphalt surface, they cannot compensate for a surface that is damaged by cracks or potholes. Such damages must be repaired prior to the sealcoating.

Finally, asphalt sealants must be applied in thin layers, even if this means applying more than one coat. A thick layer of sealant is similar to a thick layer of paint — it will not dry properly, the finish leaves much to be desired and the possibilities are excellent that flaking will occur.

Amazing History of Asphalt

Amazing History of AsphaltThe world’s demand for asphalt road construction was no surprise. At one time, roads were merely pathways that emerged when humans and animals frequently traveled routes. Of course, dirt, mud, and natural growth could impair travel. One can only imagine how magical it seemed to travel on a surface that did not become muddy.

Amazing History of Asphalt – When Did It Start?

Although ancient Babylonians used asphalt in 625 B.C., Europeans and Americans did not experiment with it until centuries later. In the mid-1700s, several Scottish gentleman influenced asphalt construction. Thomas Treford recognized that the preparation of the underlying surface and anticipated traffic were important considerations before construction. John Lourdan McAdam developed a method of packing stones tightly, and John Metcalf created a method of layering stone, materials from the earth, and gravel to promote drainage. In the 1800s, the first asphalt road in America was built in front of New Jersey’s City Hall.

Initially, all asphalt came from natural sources. However, most asphalt mixes were man-made by 1907. The increase in automobiles enhanced the need for improved roads.  In order to meet production demands, asphalt construction technology improved. Machinery, such as rollers and mixers, replaced manual steps of paving construction. As time advanced, other technology made it easier and faster to produce asphalt.

Currently, roads, buildings, sports courts, parking lots, and other construction is built with asphalt. Its durability, cost, and eco-friendly properties make it an excellent choice for many projects. Given the many advantages of asphalt, it is likely that its uses will continue to expand.

How do I choose a reputable contractor?

Finding a paving contractor you can trust is similar to finding a physician you can trust. You start by asking people you know if they can refer a reputable contractor. You then seek recommendations from professional associations or people involved in the construction industry. Finally, you review advertisements in the phone book or newspaper.

Armed with a list of candidates, your next step is to research each contractor’s reputation and standing. Call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s consumer protection agency, local watchdog groups and your state’s licensing board. Ask whether the contractor has a history of complaints, especially any that were not resolved.

The Internet can also be a source of information on contractors. There are a number of sites where users can post reviews about their experience with a business. Bear in mind, however, that people are more likely to vent about negative encounters than to rave about positive ones, so although you should take negative comments seriously, do not assume that if there are no reviews — positive or negative — it is a bad sign.

Use your own common sense when making your choice. For example, you know that a paving contractor cannot offer a firm price on a job if he has never even seen your property. You know that if he is not willing to place commitments in writing that you might have difficulty recouping your money if the job is not completed or is not up to par. You know that a contractor who tries to confuse you with double-speak is likely unscrupulous.

Asphalt  Pavement Solutions has been in business since 1983, so we are painfully aware that consumers have been preyed upon by disreputable contractors. When you deal with us, however, you are dealing with a company that prides itself in delivering quality work and superior service to our customers.
